I really like playing with the app called Babyface. It is a “baby appearance predictor”. Meaning, it creates a full color graphic of what your baby may look like .

Now, this is for fun so don’t be surprised if it isn’t accurate. The app has an amazingly scientific explanation behind the technology which is supposed to generate the babyface… despite that mumbojumbo, it is a lot of fun.

App #3 – Best Baby Naming App

NameShake is an app I really love. It has over 19,000 names and, the coolest part, you just set a few parameters, shake your iPhone and, voila, out pops a cool baby name you never would have thought of.  

My husband loves it too. We purchased quite a few baby naming books but this app is really all we needed.

Obviously, there are lots of apps on iTunes. These are just the 3 I played with the most.

Motivating a child to practice regularly is a chore at the best of times. Children are often even less excited about practicing when they know that their parents don’t play. It’s tough for kids to see the value in a musical education under these circumstances.

Dads can make a difference in the musical education of their children even if they’ve never played piano before. It’s never too late to learn something new. You might not become a virtuoso, but that’s not the point. The point is to show your child that piano playing is a valuable life skill.

Dads who haven’t previously taken piano lessons can get started by doing one or more of the following:

* Taking a parent/child piano class. Some music schools offer parent/child piano lessons. Many are actually founded on the philosophy that children learn best through active parent participation. Parent/child classes teach basic musical skills but also foster healthy interaction between parent and child. Plus, dads who never took piano lessons get to learn right along with their children.

* Take a self-tutorial. Piano tutorials are available in workbook and DVD form as well as online. Tutorials are self-directed and cover the basics like note reading and chords. Online tutorials sometimes have the added advantage of access to an online mentor. Self tutorials range in price. Many are free. Most courses cost between $25 and $100 for basic foundational skills. Find an instructor who understands what your goal is: to lead your child by example. Your instructor can design a lesson plan that helps meet those needs without scaring you with long-winded classical pieces. He or she can teach you the basics and give you a great foundation for piano playing for and with your child.

Dads who master the basics of piano playing have another advantage that non-musical dads don’t. Pianist fathers have one more way to encourage kids to turn off the television and engage in something productive and beneficial. Impromptu family concerts, father/child duets or simply making up goofy songs together fosters relaxation, bonding and emotional health.

In understanding its name we gain insight into the foundation of the system – developing self defense skills in a “natural way.” The basic tenet of this discipline is to never seek harm. Instead, Shinto Ryu endeavors to equip students with skills that give them the ability to avoid, diffuse and or walk away from dangerous and difficult situations. Of paramount importance is teaching practitioners defusing techniques and the confidence to use and apply these skills effectively.

Acquiring the knowledge and physical skills to be able to act effectively in times of threat and great danger helps develop the confidence necessary to handle sticky situations. An important aspect of this is body language. Our body language tells a lot about us – in fact, research has shown that many victims of crimes actually had the body language and posture of a victim prior the to crime occurring. Shinto Ryu is a modern discipline. Practical techniques are taught based on a star movement, which allows you to defend yourself from any conceivable angle, whether standing or sitting down. Reality is the key to this system of self defense. Practitioners are taught how to respond to different real world situations, such as being threatened while traveling via public transportation, in their cars, at work, on the street and many other common scenarios.

As part of its self defense strategy, Shinto Ryu teaches you how to improvise with items you are likely to have at hand- for instance using a chair or small table as a barrier, and umbrella or broom handle as a weapon. Shinto Ryu practicioners train in a uniform that looks like the standard karate uniform commonly worn today. Weapons training is narrowed down to the use of a shinai (bamboo stick). The shinai has been incorporated for practicality’s sake, not in the same way as in the art of kendo. It is used to replicate a potential weapon, such as a piece of wood, iron bar or pole that potentially may be at hand in normal everyday environments, so that the practitioner can learn to strike and defend effectively with a weapon that may be easily found.
